El Salvador: Evaluation of Finca San Jorge
Since 1989 IM has been supporting the organization ANADES (Asociación Nuevo Amanecer de El Salvador) in El Salvador. ANADES promotes education, community development, health and environmental sustainability in a wide range of projects, all aimed at poverty reduction.
In 2001, land was bought to develop an agro-forestry plantation in the Department of Sonsonate. The purpose was to create an income generating project where both the products and the profit from the commercialization of the products would promote the sustainability of ANADES’ child center Alfonso Acevedo in San Salvador.
The plantation is called Finca San Jorge, and the production focuses on coffee (sold in the IM stores around Sweden), vegetables, fruit trees, honey, balsam trees and fowl. The project has been very successful, but this year it was time to identify what areas need to be reinforced and how. An external consultant conducted an evaluation divided into two parts: 1) an analysis of financial reports from 2002-2008, 2) recommendations for the future.
