Guatemala: Baseline study
In San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala, IM is supporting the women's organization CODEIM (Asociación de Mujeres de San Miguel). Their project consists of circulating some 20 villages in the municipality, educating them in the areas of health, hygiene, nutrition and women's rights.
The illiteracy rate is high in the area, affecting women the most, since parents often give priority to the boys when it comes to schooling. This means that women have very few opportunities to learn about their rights and obligations in society, which is an obstacle for the improvement of women's situation in a society where the machista culture is a dominant force.
CODEIM and IM want to change this, and are planning an alphabetization project in the villages where CODEIM are active. For us to be able to measure progress, an external consultant has conducted a baseline study of the level of literacy within the target group, against which we will measure results at the end of the project.
