SOIR-IM office in Nepal organised a training of bio-pesticides and Integrated Pest Management within its program of Rural Livelihood and Support. The training was conducted for 5 days with effect from 8-12 June 2008. Resource persons and leader farmers participated in the field based as well as in-house training. In order to conduct the training smoothly and effectively, each day, leader farmers of the respective field collected insects and diseased samples of various crops.
The objective of the training was to conduct training on non-chemical approach especially using eco-friendly tools and bio-pesticides within the frame of the integrated pest management (IPM). The methodologies used were problem ranking and need assessment, participatory discussion, group works, presentations, field works with application of methodologies of bio-rational tools. In each class, the contents were discussed theoretically and also practically in the fields demonstrating with the IPM tools and biorational compounds. The topics of the training were covered with handouts which were handed over to the participants. Insect sex pheromone traps using funnel trap, Mac fall traps, modified Steiner trap (Heli lure, Spodo lure, Bactrocera lure, Bactrocera lure, cue lure) were demonstrated. Participants were made familiarized with the trapping, recording and assessment techniques.
